Why Data Backups are an Important Component of Web Hosting

June 16, 2015 — by Andreas0

backup.jpg

Without a backup, your data is not safe. If you ever lose your information due to a crash or other problem, you will want to know that all of your data can be restored as quickly as possible, and a good data backup is necessary to do that! If not, you are looking at paying someone a lot of money for data retrieval, and instead of doing that, you should focus on keeping costs low with a solid data backup plan.

Before you decide how to implement backups, you should fully understand what they are. A data backup is a copy and archive of your computer data. If something happens where you lose data, the backup can fill in the blanks to restore your computer to what it was before the data loss took place. This might sound like something that does not happen often, but data loss can be as simple as a corrupt application, virus, or natural disaster that affects your computer.

In terms of frequency, data backups should be built into your business plan and implemented on a daily basis. Whatever work was done that day, you will want included in the backup so you do not have to re-do any work in the event of a loss.

Do you think your web host offers backup? It is likely, especially if you use a VPS server, but unless you have confirmation from your host, do not assume that this is the case. You will want to know that your web host runs backups and will be able to restore any of your data if the need arises.

On your end of things, you should also run backups of all user data. The last thing you want to do is lose client information and have to ask for it again, as this makes you appear untrustworthy and unprepared. Always ensure that you have backups of customer data, your own information, and the files that are on your website.

Now that you know what backups are and how important it is to use them, it is easier to understand your options for backing up data and what advantages and disadvantages each option entails.

A full backup backs up all of your files and folders every time that information is accessed, which keeps all of the information together and makes for easy restoration. However, this practice takes more time and space, so it may not be the best choice depending on your resources.

Incremental backup builds on itself, creating a backup of files that have changed since the last incremental backup. It stores files in stages as they are accessed, requiring a smaller amount of space. If you have to restore, you need to make sure you have all of the backup sets to complete your data.

A mirror backup is an exact copy of backup data, identical to a full backup but with uncompressed, unprotected files. You can access these files easily and restore quickly, but it requires a lot of space and is not a safe option for sensitive data as it cannot be protected with a password.

The other option is a differential backup, which looks at what files have been modified since your last full backup and stores those changes. With this option you use a very small amount of storage space, but you will also have to do more work if you need to restore, as you will have to install both the differential and full backup sets.

No matter what type of backup style or approach you use, it is important to choose one and make sure you use it to back up your files frequently and regularly for your own peace of mind and for the continued, secure operation of your business.

Dedicated Hosting – Should You Upgrade?

June 9, 2015 — by Andreas0

original-1024x682.jpeg

Shared hosting is one of the ways most website owners start out. It is inexpensive, easy to handle, and a commonplace arrangement for smaller websites. Eventually, though, there will come a time when you should consider moving up to dedicated hosting.

A dedicated hosting plan is more of a financial commitment than shared hosting, but the extra expense brings many benefits along with it.

As a shared user you have to split resources amongst your hosting neighbors. Whether you are a heavy resource user or others on the same server take a lot of the memory and power, you will probably find, at some point, that it is an inequitable arrangement. If you find that you are not getting the CPU power and RAM you need, a dedicated server can fill in the gaps and give you exactly what you need without having to worry about other’s requirements.

You should also think about the software and other features your website requires. If you want to offer SSL for transactions or sharing private data, for instance, it is difficult to arrange this with a shared host. Dedicated server plans make accommodations for your unique software needs, and give you ultimate control over all of the configurations of your server. It is designed just for you, and your needs dictate how the website will run.

You may want your own IP address, for a variety of reasons – keeping control over your online identity involves having your own identifier so your host neighbor’s actions do not reflect on you. This is one of the big benefits of dedicated hosting.

If you think dedicated hosting is the right choice for you, take a look at your budget and determine what you can afford. In most cases a dedicated hosting plan is well worth the increased expense, in exchange for privacy, security, and control.

There are a few differences between SEO hosting and conventional hosting that prove just how valuable SEO hosting is for its users. If you have your websites set up with various hosts and VPS accounts, read on for the reasons you should consider a switch.

Using SEO hosting is one of the best ways to improve search engine rankings, as you will generate back links from a variety of reputable C-classes which looks great to search engines.

It is also a cost-efficient way to run things as you can get bulk pricing for numerous IP addresses and save yourself the expense of having to buy links to boost search engine results page rankings. In the long run, SEO hosting should save you money, which will allow you to pass those cost savings on to your customers, or invest more in your company.

Moving away from multiple hosts to one solid SEO hosting provider means if you have any issues, questions or concerns, you only have to ask one company for help. It is like one-stop shopping, letting you deal with all of your hosting needs without having to jump around through various customer support desks, email addresses, or phone calls.

How SEO Hosting Can Help Your SEO Company

May 26, 2015 — by Andreas0

things-you-need-to-work-on-seo-1024x576.jpg

As a SEO company you are always trying to get more links, especially to international customers. One way to do this is to use multiple European C-classes, which can help foreign websites rank higher in search engine results pages.

Links are what will get your sites ranked, and links that come from websites in the same country as your clients’ websites is the best way to get good results. If you develop C-classes in other countries and hire content writers to fill them out with pertinent information, you can offer these services to your clients who have foreign websites.

With SEO hosting you will own and control these sites and their content, which gives you more say over what goes on, and costs less than buying links.

Pick up multiple IPs from a variety of companies, and use SEO hosting to your advantage. It will cost the same as buying IPs in your own country, but give you far more flexibility and options for clients.

How Incremental Backup Can Help You

Backups are not necessarily a glamorous function but they are definitely needed – without a good backup, your company will be lost if a failure, data breach, or other issue occurs. Companies need backups, and they need them to work. A blank backup is useless, after all!

The first step to generating a good backup system is to make sure you have all of the pertinent information about what you are backing up and why. Make this a team effort – different people will have varying perspectives on what data is important enough to be backed up, so this should be taken into consideration. Map out your systems carefully and take your time.

Once you know what you are backing up, prioritize it. Some of your data is likely less important than other systems. For instance, most companies will want – and need – their email system to be up and running at all times. By establishing what recovery times are acceptable for what features, you will be able to keep your business functioning in the event of a problem requiring backup.

A lot of companies have relied on file-level backup, which enables the backup server to retrieve files from certain specified directories. In this case, recovery time can be prolonged as the operating system and applications have to be reinstalled before actual data recovery can start. The more data that has to be recovered, the longer it will take, losing you time and money.

Incremental backup can be a much better choice for lots of companies. The entire environment, from operating system to files and applications, is backed up, so in the event of a crash, the restore will bring your data back to what it was before the problem took place, making for a much quicker recovery time.

Incremental backup is one of the best things you can do to keep your company functioning well, so as you are setting up your backup system, keep it in mind as a viable option for handling data.

Shared Hosting Security – Some Common Issues

May 12, 2015 — by Andreas0

shared-website-hosting-ecommerce-us-1024x683.jpg

Are you using shared hosting? This is a good way to save money and is typically a great choice for smaller websites, but there are a few things you should know to maximize the security of your site.

Shared hosting requires users to share the same server, and frequently, the same IP address through virtual hosting. You will have separate domains and different content on your websites, but you and other people on the shared host are linked through your server.

The shared IP can pose some problems for people, as all of you are linked through the same address – if one shared user does something negative, like spamming, you and everyone else using that IP address will be blacklisted. You cannot control what your shared host neighbors do, so if you are concerned about this, shared hosting may not be the best choice for your purposes.

You will also have to share CPU and RAM with others on the shared host. While you will get your own disk space, sharing the memory and power can have an adverse effect on your site if there is one user who is a resource hog.

Hacking attempts can also be very challenging for people on a shared host – when one site goes down, the rest might go with it, taking down the entirety of the server.

There are of course benefits to using shared hosting, but if you are looking for SEO hosting, using a virtual private server, or dedicated server, may be a better choice. Talk to your hosting provider about your options so you can find a hosting solution that is suitable for your needs.

Better Security Using a Virtual Private Server

May 8, 2015 — by Andreas0

banner2-1024x499.jpg

A Virtual Private Server (VPS) is a great way to host your website, and is far more secure than other options like shared hosting. Still, there are a few things you can do to really tweak your VPS and make it as secure as possible.

Follow these security tips and you will benefit from added protection.

Make sure your software is frequently updated. Patches and fixes for security vulnerabilities are released often, and they only work when they are installed, so make software updates a routine part of your website maintenance.

Make sure that remote root logins are not enabled, as anyone who can get into your root account can take over the entire server. Make a new user account that can escalate to a root account if necessary, then disable root logins in your SSH settings right away.

Most web applications require strong, secure passwords, and a VPS is no different. If your password is easily guessed or brute forced, you will lose all security and protection. Make strong passwords and make any users of your VPS do the same.

If you are transferring files, make sure you use a secure method. FTP is not as secure as you might think – use an encrypted SSH login, using a method like SFTP. This will help protect your password and other login information, and secure any sensitive data you may be sharing.

Ensure your file and directory permissions are set up properly. You can read, write, and execute as an owner, group, or others, so there are lots of different combinations to enable access and modification of files. Do not give the wrong people more access than they need!

Back up your data all the time. Make sure you have routine, automated backups scheduled and stored off-site so you can restore and recover any lost information immediately.

As you deal with user accounts, make sure you clean up your lists frequently. Inactive accounts leave room for unwanted access so delete anything that should not be there.

By following these suggestions you will ensure you are focused on security, protection, and the longevity of your information.

Security Tips for New VPS Users

May 4, 2015 — by Andreas0

data-security_2283310b.jpg

vps securityIf it is your first time using a Virtual Private Server (VPS) you are probably itching to get started, but before you jump right in, there are a few things you should know to make sure your VPS is secured. Most people rely on their shared hosting provider to handle security but if you’re using a VPS, that responsibility is yours alone, so make sure you know what you’re doing!

Secure logins and other access – Having a strong, secure password is very important for your protection all over the place, VPS included. You should also limit SSH access to the bare minimum of users who really need it, and do not allow root logins – anyone who gets in with a root account can control your entire server, so this is a huge safety risk, especially considering that a hacker can get in via brute force if you do not disallow this type of login.

Always update software – Patches and fixes stop vulnerabilities in applications, services and scripts from being wide open for malicious intent. The fixed versions of software, however, only work when they are installed. Do not delay updates, as they are one of the most important and easy ways for you to secure your VPS.

Focus on protection – By installing network firewalls, application firewalls, brute force detection and other preventative measures for your operating system, you are making it much more difficult for any unwanted individuals to gain access.

Use system monitors – As a VPS administrator you have to be ready to address problems before it is too late. Use system monitors to keep a watchful eye on your VPS, to find and flush out issues quickly.

Make frequent backups – Always back up your server and make sure the backups will actually restore your files and settings. In the event that something goes wrong, a robust, functioning backup can get you back up and running quickly without losing important information.

Shut down unnecessary services – When you start up your server you are likely running a lot of services and daemons that are not necessary for your purposes. As the number of services running on your server increases, so do the opportunities for unwanted access through open ports.

Cut down on unneeded services and you will increase protection as well as performance.
Try executing # chkconfig –list to see what the startup status is of services on your server. To stop a service at startup time, execute # chkconfig –levels off. This should help you narrow your services down to the essentials.
